Solar panels in Southport

Solar panels in Southport have a head start on the rest of Merseyside: PVGIS models a 4 kWp south-facing array here at about 4,090 kWh a year, around 6 per cent more than the same system in Liverpool. We survey roofs across PR8 and PR9, from Birkdale, Hillside and Ainsdale to Churchtown, High Park and Marshside, checking conservation-area status and coastal exposure before we design anything.

Solar panels in Southport: what is different here

01 About 4,090 kWh a year — the best figure on Merseyside

PVGIS puts a 4 kWp array facing south at 35 degrees in Southport at roughly 4,091 kWh a year, with about 536 kWh in May and 117 kWh in December. Facing east it is still around 3,120 kWh. That is about 6 per cent more than the same array modelled in Liverpool city centre.

02 Conservation areas: Lord Street, the Promenade, Birkdale Park, Churchtown

Sefton has 25 conservation areas, several of them in Southport. In a conservation area, panels cannot go on a wall fronting a highway under permitted development, and a listed building needs listed building consent from Sefton Council before panels go on at all.

03 Big villa roofs, often natural slate

Nearly half of Southport's households are semi-detached, 47.5% against 31.5% across England, and many are large inter-war and Edwardian houses. Older slate roofs are checked for condition and remaining life before anything goes on them, because lifting and refitting an array later costs far more than doing the roof first.

04 Sea wind off the Irish Sea

Southport sits at the top of the Sefton Coast, the largest sand dune system in England. West-facing homes take the prevailing weather straight off the sea, so wind loading on the array and its fixings is calculated for the site rather than assumed.

05 A town that is home in the daytime

Census 2021 recorded 25.8% of Southport residents as aged 65 and over, against 18.6% across England and Wales. A household at home during the day uses far more of its midday generation directly, which improves the return before a battery is even considered.

06 Mostly gas-heated, so be realistic

Census 2021 put 82.3% of Southport households on mains gas only. Panels cut the electricity bill, not the gas one, unless a diverter sends surplus to a hot water cylinder.

Why Southport roofs do well

Southport's PVGIS figure is the strongest of any town we cover, and a south-facing slope on a Birkdale or Churchtown semi is about as good a solar canvas as the North West offers. That does not mean every roof suits panels. Shading from mature trees on the older avenues, chimney stacks on Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the condition of old slate all come into it. We model your roof's own orientation and pitch through PVGIS, measure the shading, and put the modelled annual output in writing. The method and the wider picture are on our solar PV page.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

Several of Southport's conservation areas cover exactly the kind of large period houses whose roofs are big enough for a serious array. In a conservation area, permitted development does not allow panels on a wall fronting a highway; roof panels are generally still possible, but they must project no more than 200 mm from the slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. A listed building is a separate matter and needs listed building consent from Sefton Council. We check the property's status before we quote, not after you have signed.

Using what you generate

With a quarter of residents over 65, plenty of Southport homes are occupied through the day, which is when panels generate. That pushes up the share of generation used directly in the house. A battery lifts it further and can carry a cheap overnight tariff through the winter, when output falls to about a fifth of the summer peak. We fit the Fox ESS range; see battery storage. Solar and domestic batteries are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027.

Solar and your heating

Southport is overwhelmingly gas-heated, so for most homes solar is an electricity saving and the boiler carries on as before. If you have a hot water cylinder, a diverter can heat water with surplus generation. If the house is electrically heated, or you are weighing up an air source heat pump, solar becomes a much bigger part of the picture. We service and install boilers across PR8 and PR9 too; our Southport area guide covers the heating side.

Common questions

Can I have solar panels in a Southport conservation area?

Usually on the roof, with conditions. In a conservation area permitted development does not allow panels on a wall fronting a highway, and roof panels must project no more than 200 mm and sit below the highest part of the roof. If the house is listed, you need listed building consent from Sefton Council. We check before quoting.

Does the sea air affect solar panels in Southport?

Coastal exposure affects the design rather than ruling solar out. Wind loading is calculated for the site and the mounting chosen to suit it, and the roof covering has to be sound enough for the fixings. Keep overhanging growth clear and, if gulls are a nuisance on your road, consider bird proofing around the array.

How much will panels generate on my Southport roof?

PVGIS models a 4 kWp array facing south at 35 degrees in Southport at about 4,091 kWh a year, and an east-facing one at about 3,120 kWh. Your own roof's orientation, pitch and shading change that, so we model it and put the figure in writing with the quote.
