Boiler installation in Allerton

Allerton is our patch as much as anyone's — from the 1930s semis around the Allerton Road shops to the big Victorian villas that back onto Calderstones Park, and the wide interwar avenues off Menlove Avenue and Mather Avenue. Our Gas Safe engineers have been fitting boilers across L18 and L19 for over 30 years. We size the boiler to the house, not the other way round, and we'll tell you straight what your property actually needs.

We know heating in Allerton

Not a national call-centre — a Merseyside team that understands the homes we work in.

01 L18 and L19 — the Allerton streets we cover

Allerton straddles two postcode districts, L18 and L19, and we install right across both — the shopping run on Allerton Road, the avenues ringing Calderstones Park, Springwood, Mather Avenue and the stretch between Woolton Road and Menlove Avenue, with West Allerton station in the middle of it.

02 Calderstones Park and six neolithic stones

Calderstones Park takes its name from the Calderstones themselves — six sandstone monoliths from a burial monument built between 4000 and 3000 BC, protected as a scheduled monument and the oldest structure in Liverpool. The park was laid out around Calderstones House, built in 1828 for lead-shot manufacturer Joseph Need Walker, and the Allerton Oak behind it was named England's Tree of the Year in 2019. The villas facing the park are the largest heating jobs in the area.

03 1930s semis behind the Allerton Road shops

The housing immediately around the Allerton Road shopping area is mainly 1930s semi-detached — cavity-walled, one bathroom, and very often still carrying a back boiler or a first-generation condensing combi. These are the most straightforward combi swaps we do in south Liverpool, and the ones where a modern control makes the most obvious difference to a gas bill.

04 Merchant villas from the Allerton Tower era

Allerton was estate country before it was suburb. Allerton Hall, Grade II* listed, was built around 1736 for the Hardman family; Allerton Tower, designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes of St George's Hall fame, was finished in 1849, and its lodge, stables and part of the orangery still stand, Grade II listed, in the 35-acre park between Woolton Road and Menlove Avenue. The surviving villas of that period have solid walls, high ceilings and long pipe runs, and need heat-loss sizing rather than a like-for-like swap.

05 15,240 residents and a 2030 carbon deadline

The Allerton and Hunts Cross ward recorded 15,240 residents at the 2021 Census. Every party on Liverpool City Council signed up to making the city net zero carbon by 2030 — twenty years ahead of the UK's own date. Replacing an ageing non-condensing boiler with a 92% ErP unit and proper controls is the cheapest carbon saving most Allerton households can make.

Boiler installation in Allerton, L18 and L19

We install new boilers right across Allerton, from the terraces and 1930s semis behind the Allerton Road shops to the larger detached houses on the roads that ring Calderstones Park, and out through Springwood, Mather Avenue and West Allerton. Every engineer is Gas Safe registered under registration number 541116, and we fit Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Glow-worm and Ideal. A typical straight swap is a one-day job; a back-boiler removal or a system change usually takes two. You get a written quote before anything is ordered, the old unit taken away, and full certification on handover. If your existing boiler has years left in it, we will say so rather than sell you a new one.

The right boiler changes street by street in Allerton

Allerton is not one housing type. Around the Allerton Road shopping run the stock is mainly 1930s semi-detached — cavity walls, one bathroom, often a back boiler or an early condensing combi tucked in the kitchen. Those houses usually suit a modern combi: no cylinder, no loft tank, and the airing cupboard back. Closer to Calderstones Park and along the older avenues you get large Victorian and Edwardian villas built for merchants, with three storeys, thick brick walls and two or three bathrooms added over the years. Drop a combi into one of those and the shower pressure falls away the moment someone runs a tap. That is a system boiler and a properly sized cylinder job. We work it out at survey, not over the phone.

Sizing for solid walls and older radiator circuits

Older Allerton villas of the kind that once surrounded Allerton Tower and Allerton Hall were built with solid brick walls, and solid walls let roughly twice as much heat out as an uninsulated cavity, on Energy Saving Trust figures. That does not automatically mean a bigger boiler. Oversizing is the commonest fault we find — a high output boiler short-cycling on a house that needs half of it, burning gas to heat itself. We take a room-by-room heat loss, check the existing pipework and radiator sizes, and specify the smallest boiler that comfortably covers the load. Under the Boiler Plus standard, in force in England since April 2018, every new gas boiler must be at least 92% ErP efficient, and a new combi needs one extra efficiency measure such as weather compensation or a smart control.

Guarantees, controls and paying for it

As a Worcester Accredited Installer we can register up to a 12-year guarantee on a new Worcester Bosch boiler, which is worth having on a house you intend to stay in. All work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers, registration number 541116, and certificated when we hand over. We fit Bosch EasyControl, Nest and Hive, and on a three-storey Allerton house we would normally talk about zoning the heating so the top floor is not roasting while the front room is cold. Finance is available through Novuna Personal Finance at 0% and 7.9% APR, subject to credit check, with a 14-day cooling-off period. Call 0151 440 2000 and we will book a survey rather than quote you blind.

Common questions

Which parts of Allerton do you cover?

All of it — both the L18 and L19 sides. That takes in the Allerton Road shops and the streets behind them, the roads around Calderstones Park, Springwood, Mather Avenue, West Allerton and out towards Woolton Road and Menlove Avenue. We also work in neighbouring Mossley Hill, Aigburth and Woolton. Call 0151 440 2000 and we will confirm a survey slot for your street.

What boiler suits a 1930s semi off Allerton Road?

Usually a combi. Most of those semis have one bathroom, a single family's hot water demand and often a redundant back boiler or an old floor-standing unit taking up the kitchen. A combi frees the airing cupboard and the loft tank space. Because of the Boiler Plus rules that came in across England in April 2018, a new combi also needs one extra efficiency measure — we normally fit a smart control such as Nest, Hive or Bosch EasyControl.

We have a large Victorian house near Calderstones Park with three bathrooms. Combi or system?

System, in almost every case. A combi heats water on demand, so two showers running together halve the flow at each one. A system boiler with a correctly sized cylinder stores enough hot water for a family bathroom, an en-suite and a shower room to be used at the same time. We measure your incoming mains flow rate at survey before we size anything — that figure decides what the house can actually deliver.
