Boiler installation in Childwall

Childwall is a between-the-wars suburb: wide tree-lined avenues of 1930s semis and detached houses, almost no terraces, laid out either side of Queens Drive after the Fiveways roundabout arrived around 1931. We fit and replace boilers right across L16 and the Childwall end of L25, from the streets behind All Saints' Church and Score Lane to the larger detached houses near Childwall Woods. Gas Safe registered, over 30 years at it. Call 0151 440 2000.

We know heating in Childwall

Not a national call-centre — a Merseyside team that understands the homes we work in.

01 All Saints' — Liverpool's only medieval church

All Saints' Church in old Childwall is Grade I listed and is the only medieval church remaining in the city of Liverpool. Its chancel dates from the 14th century and the south aisle and porch from the 15th, with 18th-century additions. It is the fixed point the whole suburb grew around, centuries before the 1930s avenues arrived.

02 Childwall Abbey conservation area

Childwall Abbey is one of Liverpool City Council's designated conservation areas, and the Childwall Abbey Hotel on Score Lane — an early 19th-century stone building with an embattled parapet — has been Grade II listed since June 1952. Within the boundary, flues on street-facing elevations are restricted under permitted development, and listed properties need consent for external work.

03 Interwar semis still on their original layout

Housing in Childwall is almost entirely detached or semi-detached, with very few terraces, and most of it went up between the wars. That means a lot of homes here were plumbed for a regular heat-only boiler with a cold-water tank in the loft and a cylinder in the airing cupboard — a layout still in place in plenty of L16 houses today.

04 Queens Drive and the Fiveways roundabout

Queens Drive was conceived by John Alexander Brodie, Liverpool's City Engineer from 1898 to 1926, and is generally described as the first ring road built in the country. The Childwall Fiveways roundabout followed around 1931 and the avenues filled in around it — which is why so much of the local stock shares one build era and one heating design.

05 L16, the Childwall side of L25, and Childwall Woods

We cover the whole of L16 — Childwall, Bowring Park and Broadgreen — plus the Childwall end of L25. That takes in the avenues off Childwall Road, the housing along Childwall Valley Road and the larger detached properties backing onto Childwall Woods and Fields, the 39-acre Local Nature Reserve owned by Liverpool City Council.

Boiler installation across Childwall, L16 and L25

Childwall is one of the more consistent parts of the city to work in. The bulk of it went up between the wars, so the houses are close cousins — 1930s semis and detached houses on wide avenues, bay windows, decent-sized rear gardens and hardly a terrace in sight. What differs is what has happened inside them since: extensions over the old kitchen, loft conversions, a downstairs WC added, and a heating system that was never resized to match. Our Gas Safe engineers (registration 541116) look at the whole circuit, not just the boiler on the wall. Call 0151 440 2000 for a survey across L16 and the Childwall end of L25.

Why so many Childwall houses still have a tank in the loft

Most of these houses were plumbed for a regular, heat-only boiler: a cold-water storage tank in the loft, a hot-water cylinder in the airing cupboard and a gravity-fed feed to the taps. Plenty of Childwall homes are still running that layout eighty-odd years on, sometimes with a 1990s boiler bolted onto pipework that predates the war. You have three sensible routes. Keep the layout and fit a modern regular boiler, which is the least disruptive. Move to a system boiler and a pressurised cylinder, losing the loft tank but keeping stored hot water. Or go combi and reclaim the cupboard, which works if there is one bathroom and the mains flow rate is good enough — we measure it before recommending it.

Sizing for a big detached — and why oversizing costs you

Childwall has a lot of substantial detached houses with long radiator circuits, and the instinct is to fit the biggest boiler available. That is usually the wrong call. An oversized boiler cycles on and off, spends less time condensing and quietly costs you money every winter. We work out the heat loss room by room, check the gas supply can carry the output and balance the radiators on commissioning. Liverpool set itself a net zero carbon target for 2030 — twenty years ahead of the national deadline — and a correctly sized condensing boiler with weather compensation does more for that than a bigger badge on the front. It also leaves the system ready if you move to a heat pump later.

Guarantees, controls and finance in Childwall

We are Worcester Accredited Installers, so a new Worcester Bosch boiler can carry up to a 12-year guarantee, and we also fit Vaillant, Baxi, Glow-worm and Ideal. Around the older core of Childwall — the streets near All Saints' Church and the Childwall Abbey conservation area — flue positions need thinking about before the boiler is ordered, because conservation-area rules restrict flues on elevations fronting a highway and listed properties need consent. On smart controls we fit Bosch EasyControl, Nest and Hive, which suit a bigger house with rooms used at different times. Finance is available through Novuna Personal Finance at 0% and 7.9% APR, subject to credit check, with a 14-day cooling-off period.

Common questions

Should I keep the loft tank or move to a combi?

It depends on bathrooms and mains flow. If your 1930s Childwall semi has one bathroom and a strong incoming main, a combi frees up the airing cupboard and the loft. If you have two bathrooms, an en-suite or a big family using hot water at the same time, keep stored hot water and go system. We measure your mains flow and pressure at survey before we recommend either.

Is my house in the Childwall Abbey conservation area?

Childwall Abbey is one of Liverpool's designated conservation areas, but it is a defined boundary rather than the whole suburb — Liverpool City Council publishes the map and will confirm a specific address. It matters because in a conservation area a flue cannot go on a principal or side elevation fronting a highway under permitted development, and anything external on a listed building needs consent. We check before you order.

We've extended the back of the house — do we need a bigger boiler?

Not necessarily a bigger boiler, but almost certainly a recalculation. A lot of Childwall semis have a rear extension or a converted loft added decades after the heating was designed, and the original boiler and radiators were sized for the smaller house. We work out the heat loss for every room as it stands now, check the existing radiators can deliver it and confirm the gas supply carries the output before quoting.
