Boiler installation in Runcorn

Runcorn is really two towns in one, and the heating reflects it. Our Gas Safe engineers fit Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Baxi boilers in the Victorian terraces of the Old Town and Higher Runcorn, and across the new town estates at Castlefields, Palacefields, Murdishaw, Halton Lea and Windmill Hill — out to Beechwood, Norton, Weston, Halton Village and the newer homes at Sandymoor. Thirty years of fitting boilers across Merseyside and Cheshire means we know what we'll find behind the panel.

We know heating in Runcorn

Not a national call-centre — a Merseyside team that understands the homes we work in.

01 WA7, sector by sector

Runcorn's WA7 postcode district covered 63,180 residents at the 2021 Census. We work across all of it: WA7 1 (town centre, Manor Park), WA7 2 (Castlefields, Halton, Palacefields, Beechwood), WA7 3 (Preston Brook, Sutton Weaver, Whitehouse), WA7 4 (Weston, Weston Point), WA7 5, and WA7 6 (Murdishaw, Brookvale, Windmill Hill, Norton).

02 Designated a New Town in April 1964

Runcorn was designated a New Town in April 1964 — 7,240 acres, with an existing town of roughly 30,000 people planned to reach 90,000 by 1989. That designation is why the town splits so cleanly today: Victorian terraces around Bridge Street and the Old Quay, then 1960s and 1970s estates at Castlefields, Palacefields, Murdishaw, Windmill Hill and Halton Lea. Boiler sizing, flue routes and radiator circuits differ sharply between the two.

03 Halton's climate emergency and 2040 net zero target

Halton Borough Council declared a climate emergency on 16 October 2019 and is working towards net zero carbon by 2040 — ten years ahead of the national 2050 target. Swapping an ageing non-condensing boiler for an A-rated model with proper controls is the cheapest first step most Runcorn households can take towards it.

04 The new town's electric and district-heating legacy

Runcorn's new town experimented with communal heating and it did not end well: the Southgate estate was demolished between 1990 and 1992, with the running cost of its district heating scheme widely blamed for the rent rises that made it unlettable, and over a thousand Castlefields deck-access flats came down before that redevelopment finished around 2012. Census 2021 records only about 120 Runcorn households on a communal heat network today, but roughly 1,350 heated by electricity alone.

05 Weston Point chemistry and two bridges over the Mersey

The Castner-Kellner alkali works came on stream at Weston Point in 1897, became part of ICI in the 1920s and passed to INEOS in 2001. The terraced and semi-detached housing that grew up around Weston, Weston Point and Higher Runcorn in that period is mostly solid-walled stock with an existing flue. Reaching it is straightforward — the Mersey Gateway opened on 14 October 2017 and the refurbished Silver Jubilee Bridge reopened in February 2021, so our Liverpool engineers have two crossings to choose from.

06 83% on mains gas — and the off-grid fringe

Census 2021 puts 23,541 of Runcorn's 28,265 households on mains gas only, about 83%, comfortably above the 74% England and Wales average. The exceptions sit on the rural fringe: the Sandymoor, Daresbury and Preston Brook area alone accounts for 81 oil-heated homes and 63 on tank or bottled gas. Properties there with no mains gas connection may be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme toward low-carbon heating.

Two towns, two heating systems

Runcorn was designated a New Town in April 1964, and that single decision split the town's heating in two. South and east of the old centre, the estates at Castlefields, Palacefields, Murdishaw, Windmill Hill and Halton Lea went up through the late 1960s and 1970s. Down by the Mersey, Bridge Street, the Old Quay and Higher Runcorn are still lined with the terraces that grew up after the Bridgewater Canal reached Runcorn in 1776. The two need different things from a boiler: a Victorian terrace usually has generous old pipework and a chimney breast to work with, while a new town house is tighter, better insulated and often on a small-bore circuit. We quote on what's actually there, not on the postcode.

New town estates: Castlefields, Palacefields and Murdishaw

On the new town estates we spend a lot of time on radiator circuits. Many of these homes were built fast and system-built — Castlefields alone lost more than a thousand deck-access flats before its redevelopment finished around 2012 — so what's left is a mix of original 1970s houses and much newer red-brick replacements sitting side by side on the same street. Census 2021 counted roughly 1,350 Runcorn households still heated by electricity alone, with the highest concentrations around the town centre, Halton Lea and Brookvale. Converting one of those to gas is a bigger job than swapping a boiler: it means a gas supply check, a new radiator circuit and pipework run through a house that never had any. We'll price the whole thing up front.

Old Town terraces, Halton Village and Weston

The older half of Runcorn asks different questions. Terraces off Bridge Street, the streets behind the Old Quay and the properties around Halton Village and Weston tend to be solid-walled, with a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard and a cold tank in the loft. Moving that to a combi frees up two cupboards and a loft, but only if the incoming main can carry the flow — worth checking before anyone promises you a combi. Where a house has two bathrooms, or you would rather keep the stored hot water, a system boiler is usually the calmer choice. Halton Village sits inside a conservation area, so flue positions and external terminals need more thought there than they do on Beechwood or Sandymoor.

Gas Safe registered, Worcester Accredited

Every engineer who comes to your door in Runcorn is Gas Safe registered under registration number 541116, and we have been fitting boilers across Merseyside and Cheshire for over 30 years. As a Worcester Accredited Installer we can offer up to a 12-year guarantee on Worcester Bosch boilers, and we also fit Vaillant, Baxi, Glow-worm and Ideal, so you are not being steered towards one brand because it is the only one we know. Smart controls go in on the same visit if you want them — Bosch EasyControl, Nest or Hive — which is worth more on a solid-walled Old Town terrace than on a newer Sandymoor house, purely because there is more heat to lose.

Getting a quote in Runcorn

We're based at Basecamp Liverpool on Jamaica Street in the Baltic Triangle, which puts Runcorn a short run east along the A562 and over the Mersey Gateway — open since October 2017, with the refurbished Silver Jubilee Bridge back in service since February 2021. That matters on a breakdown in January. For a planned replacement, finance is available through Novuna Personal Finance at 0% and 7.9% APR, subject to credit check and with a 14-day cooling-off period. Out at Preston Brook, Preston on the Hill and Daresbury, where the mains gas network thins out, it is worth talking through heat pumps and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme before you replace like for like. Call 0151 440 2000 and we'll book a visit.

Common questions

My house is on one of the new town estates — will a combi work?

Usually, yes, but the radiator circuit decides it. A lot of the 1960s and 1970s houses at Castlefields, Palacefields, Murdishaw and Windmill Hill were plumbed with narrow pipework and small radiators sized for the original system. We check flow rate at the main, the state of the circuit and whether a power flush is needed before quoting, because a combi fitted onto a tired circuit will never perform properly.

Can you replace electric heating with a gas boiler in Runcorn?

Often, yes. Census 2021 found roughly 1,350 Runcorn households heated by electricity alone, most of them around the town centre, Halton Lea and Brookvale. It is a bigger job than a boiler swap: the property needs a gas supply, a meter, a full radiator circuit and pipe runs. We'll survey it, tell you honestly whether it stacks up against a modern electric or heat pump option, and price the work in full before you decide.

Which Runcorn areas do you cover, and what guarantee do I get?

We cover the whole WA7 district — the Old Town, Halton Village, Weston, Castlefields, Palacefields, Murdishaw, Norton, Beechwood, Sandymoor and out to Preston Brook and Daresbury — reaching Runcorn over the Mersey Gateway or the Silver Jubilee Bridge from our Baltic Triangle base. Every engineer is Gas Safe registered under number 541116, and as a Worcester Accredited Installer we can offer up to a 12-year guarantee on Worcester Bosch boilers. Call 0151 440 2000.
