What Gas Safe registration actually means
In Great Britain it is a legal requirement, under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, that anyone working on gas appliances, fittings or pipework for reward is on the Gas Safe Register. Registration belongs to the business, and each engineer working for it holds their own licence. The licence card carries the engineer's photo, their licence number and an expiry date, and the back lists the categories of work they are qualified to do, because being registered for domestic boilers is not the same as being registered for every gas appliance. Ask to see the card, check the categories match the job, and you can check both the business and the engineer on the Gas Safe Register online or by phone. Our business registration is 541116. An engineer who is reluctant to show the card is the answer to the question.
The gas work we do
Most of our gas work centres on the boiler and what feeds it. That means new boiler installations and replacements, back boiler removals with the old supply capped off properly, servicing and repairs, and landlord gas safety checks. It also means the pipework between the meter and the appliance, which is where a lot of older Liverpool homes come unstuck. BS 6891 allows a maximum 1 mbar pressure drop between the meter outlet and the appliance at full rate, and a 15mm run that fed a 1990s boiler often cannot feed a modern combi at full output, so upgrading to 22mm is a common and legitimate line on a quote. Every run we install or alter is tightness tested and the working pressure checked at the appliance before it is signed off.
Landlord gas safety checks, briefly
If you let a property, every gas appliance and flue you are responsible for needs a safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer every 12 months, with the record given to tenants and copies kept. Since 2018 the check can be done up to two months early without losing the anniversary date. It is a safety inspection rather than maintenance, which is why most landlords book it with the annual service on the same visit. The detail, including the carbon monoxide alarm rule for rented homes, is on our boiler servicing page.
If you smell gas
Do not operate light switches or anything electrical, do not use a naked flame, open doors and windows, turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe to reach, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, free and staffed 24 hours a day. The emergency service makes the situation safe; it does not repair your appliance. Once they have been and left the supply off, a Gas Safe registered engineer finds and fixes the cause, tests the installation and turns it back on.
What happens if an engineer finds something unsafe
Gas engineers follow the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure, which sets out what must happen when an installation is not safe. An appliance classed Immediately Dangerous is disconnected from the gas supply, with your permission, and labelled. One classed At Risk is turned off, again with your permission, and labelled. Either way you are given a written warning notice explaining the fault. It is not a sales tactic and it is not optional for the engineer; it is the industry's agreed procedure, and it applies whoever finds the problem.
Gas engineer or heating engineer?
Every one of our heating engineers is Gas Safe registered, but the two jobs are not the same. Gas work is the appliance, the gas supply and the flue. Heating work is everything the hot water flows through afterwards: pump, valves, pipework and radiators. A radiator that stays cold, a system that loses pressure or a house that never warms upstairs is usually a heating fault rather than a gas one, and our heating engineers page goes into those.

Common questions
How do I check an engineer is Gas Safe registered?
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card before work starts. Check the photo, the licence number and the expiry date, then turn it over and check the work categories cover the job you are having done. You can confirm both the engineer and the business on the Gas Safe Register website or by phone. Our business registration number is 541116.
Can a gas engineer move my gas meter?
Not the meter itself. The meter belongs to your supplier's metering provider, so moving it is arranged through your gas supplier. What a Gas Safe engineer can do is alter the pipework on your side of the meter, from the outlet to your appliances, and test and certificate it.
Do you do landlord gas safety certificates?
Yes. The 12-monthly landlord gas safety check, still widely called a CP12, covers every gas appliance and flue the landlord is responsible for. Many landlords book it alongside the annual boiler service so both are done in one visit. Call 0151 440 2000 to book.
What is the difference between a gas engineer and a plumber?
A plumber works on water. Anyone working on gas for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, whatever they call themselves. Many heating engineers are both, and all of ours are Gas Safe registered, but the registration is the legal line, not the job title.
