Worcester Boiler Low Pressure: Top It Up

A Worcester Bosch boiler wants about 1 to 1.5 bar on the gauge when the system is cold, and Worcester's installation instructions say to top it up if it drops below 1 bar. Topping up takes a couple of minutes once you know which of the three Worcester filling loops you have. This guide shows how to tell them apart, how to top up safely, and what to do if the pressure keeps falling.

Worcester Boiler Low Pressure: Top It Up

The short answer

Cold, a Worcester system should sit at about 1 to 1.5 bar. Worcester's Greenstar 4000 instructions say to fill the system to between 1 and 1.5 bar and to top it up if the pressure drops below 1 bar. Worcester's own pressure guide says to stop filling at just over one bar. It is normal for the needle to rise a little when the heating is running and settle back when it cools.

Reading the gauge

About 1 to 1.5 barNormalNothing

Older Worcester boilers have a dial gauge, newer ones show the pressure on the display. The figures in your own boiler's manual come first if they differ.

Which Worcester filling loop do you have?

Worcester boilers use one of three ways to let mains water into the heating circuit. Worcester's own guide covers all three:

TypeHow to spot itHow you top up
External filling loopA braided hose with a tap at each end, usually under the boilerOpen both taps slowly, stop at about one bar, close both taps
Internal filling loop with a keyA removable filling key that fits into the underside of the boilerInsert and turn the key, watch the pressure rise to just over one bar, turn it back and remove it
Keyless internal filling loopA blue lever at the bottom of the boilerPull the blue lever down, release it once the pressure is over one bar

Topping up safely, step by step

Turn the heating off and let the system cool, because a hot system reads high and you will under-fill it. Find the gauge so you can watch it the whole time. Let water in slowly using your loop type above, and stop as soon as the gauge reaches the figure: over-filling pushes the pressure up when the system heats and can make the pressure relief valve discharge. Close the valves fully (on an external loop, both taps). If the boiler had stopped with a fault, reset it once. If you cannot find the loop, or the key will not turn, stop and ask: forcing it is how filling loops get damaged.

If the pressure keeps dropping

A sealed system should hold its pressure. If you are topping up every few days or weeks, water is getting out somewhere, and the usual suspects are the same on a Worcester as on any boiler: a slow leak on a radiator valve or a joint under the floor, an expansion vessel that has lost its air charge (Worcester pre-charges the internal vessel to 0.75 bar), or a pressure relief valve that lets water by. A pressure that shoots up when the heating runs and drops when it cools points at the expansion vessel. Our guide to boiler pressure that keeps dropping walks through how to find each one. Leaks inside the boiler case need a Gas Safe engineer.

Why constant topping up costs you later

Every top-up brings fresh mains water into the heating circuit. That dilutes the inhibitor that protects the heat exchanger and radiators, and fresh oxygenated water speeds up the black sludge that blocks radiators and heat exchangers. A system topped up all winter often ends up with a sludged boiler as well as the original leak, which is exactly the kind of damage a manufacturer's guarantee does not cover. Find the cause rather than living with the top-ups.

Repair or replace?

A fault that clears with one reset or a top-up costs nothing. A worn electrode or a recharged expansion vessel on a boiler a few years old is a routine repair. The sums change when the boiler is twelve to fifteen years old, the fault is a gas valve, heat exchanger or control board, or the same lockout keeps coming back. As a Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer we fit the Greenstar range from £2,000 for the Greenstar 1000 to £2,850 for the Greenstar 8000 Life, fitted, with guarantees of up to 12 years on the 8000 range (subject to Worcester's conditions). Every model and price is on our boiler prices page, and finance is available. Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure side by side and decide with both in front of you.

Common questions

What pressure should my Worcester boiler be?

About 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. Worcester's Greenstar 4000 instructions say to fill to between 1 and 1.5 bar and top up if it drops below 1 bar. It rises a little when the heating is on; if it heads towards 3 bar when hot, it is too high.

How do I repressurise a Worcester boiler with a blue lever?

That is Worcester's keyless filling loop. With the system cool, pull the blue lever at the bottom of the boiler down, watch the gauge, and release the lever once the pressure is just over one bar.

Where is the filling key on a Worcester boiler?

On boilers with a keyed internal filling loop the key is a separate part that fits into the underside of the boiler, and it is often stored there or kept with the manual. If it is missing, ask your installer or a Worcester engineer rather than using a tool on the fitting.

Why does my Worcester boiler keep losing pressure?

Usually a slow leak somewhere on the system, an expansion vessel that has lost its air charge, or a pressure relief valve letting water by. If you have topped up more than once in a month, get it looked at; repeated top-ups dilute the inhibitor and speed up sludge.

Can I use my Worcester boiler with low pressure?

Most modern boilers stop and show a fault when the pressure is too low, so the heating simply will not run until it is topped up. Top up to just over one bar and reset once; if it drops again, find the cause.
