Boiler service & repair in Wirral: what is different here

01 The whole CH area

Birkenhead (CH41/CH42), Prenton and Oxton (CH43), Wallasey and New Brighton (CH44/CH45), Bebington, Bromborough and Eastham (CH62/CH63), and west Wirral — Heswall, West Kirby, Hoylake and Greasby (CH47 to CH49, CH60, CH61).

02 Seafront homes and frozen condensate

Homes along the coast at New Brighton, Meols, Hoylake and West Kirby take the weather off the estuaries. Exposed external condensate pipes freeze on cold nights and lock the boiler out, and flue terminals on weather-facing walls deserve a proper look at every service.

03 Victorian terraces on regular boilers

Much of Birkenhead, Tranmere, Rock Ferry and Wallasey is Victorian and Edwardian terracing, and plenty still runs a regular boiler with a loft tank and cylinder. These systems have more parts to fail — motorised valves, cylinder thermostats, the tank itself — and we know them well.

04 Multi-bathroom houses in west Wirral

Larger homes in Caldy, Heswall and West Kirby often run a system boiler with a stored, frequently unvented, cylinder. Unvented cylinder manufacturers usually ask for an annual inspection, so mention it when you book the boiler service.

05 Port Sunlight and conservation areas

If a repair turns into a boiler or flue replacement, flue position matters in Port Sunlight and the Wirral's other conservation areas: a flue cannot go on a wall fronting a highway under permitted development, and listed buildings need consent.

06 Cool Wirral 2041

Wirral Council declared a climate emergency on 15 July 2019 and the Cool Wirral partnership targets borough-wide net zero by 2041. A well-serviced, correctly set boiler is the cheapest efficiency step most households can take in the meantime.

Annual boiler servicing on the Wirral

Every service follows the same measured checklist: combustion analysed with a calibrated flue gas analyser, gas pressure and rate checked, burner, heat exchanger and seals inspected, condensate trap cleared, safety devices proved, flue and terminal checked outside, and the Benchmark record signed. On the exposed coastal roads we pay particular attention to the flue terminal and the external condensate run, because that is where the weather does its damage. If you have a system boiler with an unvented cylinder, ask about the cylinder inspection too. The full service checklist is on our boiler servicing page.

Boiler repairs: the Wirral's usual suspects

Three faults account for a lot of our Wirral callouts. A frozen condensate pipe on a cold morning, especially on weather-facing walls near the coast. Pressure that keeps falling on a sealed system, which is usually a small leak or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. And on the older terraces' regular systems, motorised valves and cylinder thermostats that stick, leaving hot water but no heating or the reverse. The engineer finds the fault before ordering anything and tells you the cost first. Our boiler repair page goes through the common fault codes.

Landlords and HMOs

Birkenhead, Wallasey and the older parts of the peninsula have a lot of rented property. Landlords need a gas safety check every 12 months on every appliance and flue they are responsible for, with the record given to tenants; it is a safety check, not a service, and many landlords book both on one visit. Our gas engineers page covers the detail.

Gas and heating engineers on the Wirral

Our gas engineers on the Wirral are all Gas Safe registered under our registration number, 541116, and carry a Gas Safe ID card showing the categories of gas work they are qualified for; ask to see it and check it on the Gas Safe Register. Gas work is the appliance, the gas supply and the flue. Heating work is everything the hot water flows through after that, and a lot of Wirral callouts turn out to be heating faults: radiators cold at the bottom in the older terraces of Birkenhead and Wallasey, pressure that keeps dropping, or a cylinder system in a west Wirral house that gives heating but no hot water. Our heating engineers on the Wirral deal with both. See our gas engineers and heating engineers pages for the detail.

Repair or replace

If a boiler is near the end of its life, or the repair is the heat exchanger or gas valve, we will say so plainly and give you both figures. Our Wirral boiler installation guide covers which boiler types suit the peninsula's housing, and if the system water is black, a powerflush before a new boiler goes on is money well spent.

Common questions

My boiler in West Kirby stops working every cold snap. Why?

On the exposed parts of the Wirral the usual cause is the condensate pipe freezing where it runs outside. Pouring warm, not boiling, water along the pipe from the ground usually clears it. If it happens every winter, the pipe needs upsizing, lagging, shortening or re-routing inside, and we can do that so it stops.

Do you cover the whole Wirral for boiler repairs?

Yes, the full CH postcode area, from Birkenhead and Wallasey to Bebington, Eastham, Heswall, West Kirby and Hoylake. Ring 0151 440 2000 and we will confirm when an engineer can get to you and the call-out cost before anyone sets off.

Can you service the unvented cylinder at the same time as the boiler?

Mention it when you book. Most unvented cylinder manufacturers ask for an annual inspection, and doing it on the same visit as the boiler service saves a second appointment. We will confirm what is involved for your cylinder.
